RIVER STAGE FESTIVAL 2017

If you were wandering along London’s South Bank in August, you would, understandably, have been drawn to what was happening on the bright red River Stage outside the National Theatre. For the second year in a row the National Theatre programmed 5 weekends of free music, dance, theatre, and entertainment.  And it was awesome (despite the occasional thunderstorm).

Each weekend was hosted by a different arts and culture organisation including The Glory, Home Manchester, WOMAD, Rambert, and the NT themselves.

What was hugely important to the NT was quality visual content they could use for social media, promotion and future marketing. That’s not to take away from the multitude of Instagram stories making their way into the world from all the mobile phones present, but from a need for content that has greater possibilities. It’s was also a way to ensure that everyone committed to making the weekends so special had great images not just for the day but the future too. So, although I was booked by the NT, I was also shooting for the brands, artists, and marketing and press teams behind the scenes.

So (also for the second year running), the National Theatre commissioned me as photographer-in-residence for the Festival. With a brief to capture the acts and the energy. And most importantly the enjoyment and engagement of the audiences. This was an opportunity to do what I do best: document an event up close from all manner of angles, with an eye to the multiple stories going on, the interactions between people, and the varieties of energy and creativity.
